We shape our gardens; thereafter they shape Us. (Winston Churchill, almost)
Carol Mackerras and Pauline Roberts started our herbal partnership in 2010 to make natural skincare products for the creative fun of it. This was after several years of working together in SOS Liverpool Plains - lobbying, protesting and making cakes (of course!) to save NSW's most productive farming land and underground water from the ravages of new coal mining.
We're both trained and accredited herbalists. Of the old school. We plant, we tend, we grow as much as we can. We pray for rain. We make things to solve problems. We experiment. We ponder. We research. And we have a lot of fun doing it.
The early years were a big learning experience. We still test everything on ourselves, husbands, friends, family, our clients, our animals and yes!, they were all still thriving last time we looked.
We have other passions too. Our families, our dogs and the strange mistress that is the English language.
Carol brings her grace and forward-thinking to several local Boards and supports NERAM's artistic events with her unflappable catering and organisation skills.
With the help of her infrastructurally-gifted husband, she has built a new, thriving garden from scratch over the past 6 years outside Armidale. It's a fantastic sight to behold, and of sufficient size to make a marvellous venue for our educational, 'Parties in the Pantry'.
As their stand of Oaks matures, Dangarsleigh Truffles are on the horizon too. Yum.
Pauline tends her remaining flock, prunes her roses and follows her curiosity in health and related fields to keep herself more than amused from dawn to dusk.
Her husband keeps bees and she is learning to work with them also. The bees have taught us so much.
When not in the garden, she is to be found beside delicately-balanced masses of papers, books and experiments in their office: Le Bureau des Miracles.
